Furniture? Research & Test.
May 2022
People’s consumption habits reflect their identities and play a significant role in shaping their social relationships. Often, individuals are judged based on their possessions, such as clothing and jewellery, which they may select to project a certain social identity. These choices not only serve as a basis for social judgment but also as conversation starters, thus stimulating social interactions and even driving sales.
However, this perspective differs when it comes to private possessions like furniture, which are typically viewed more as necessities reflecting personal taste rather than tools for social identity expression. These items are rarely showcased or used as a means of social interaction.
Recognizing this, I believe that exploring the social potential of these private possessions could offer a new window into understanding individuals’ identities. This exploration could reveal how these personal items, usually not intended for socializing, might inspire novel forms of interaction and social engagement.
